GYG Latin American Rugby League is pleased to announce a partnership with Africa United for the upcoming Jan 17 Youth fixture against the Philippines at Bishop Park, Brisbane.
To be played as the first curtain-raiser to the GYG Latin Heat senior team versus Asia Cup champions the PAL Philippine Tamaraws, the Youth match will kick-off the day’s proceedings at 4pm.
Caught a handful of players short of a full squad of 17, Latin American has received a wonderful offer from several players of African heritage to form a combined ‘United Nations’ team to face the Junior Tamaraws.
It means players in the team will represent non-traditional rugby league backgrounds as diverse as Uruguay, South Sudan and Ecuador.
“We’ve long admired the work Africa United has done in the community and we are in essence, very similar in trying to expose whole continents to the sport, not just single nationalities,” Latin Heat president Robert Burgin said.
“Africa United brings together players from 42 nations and the Latin Heat caters for heritage in 24 countries – none of which were represented in the most recent Rugby League World Cup.
“On paper it may seem a big advantage over the Philippines, but be rest assured the Tamaraws drill their players very professionally and have numerous boys in elite club pathways. They will be very tough.
“We had hoped to field the same Latin Heat youth squad which performed so well at October’s Harmony Cup, but at this time of year it is hard to find the money for all of the Sydney boys to fly north.”
One of the synergies between the Latin Heat and Africa United is that many players come from families that have arrived in Australia under refugee circumstances, surviving hardship to give their next generation a better shot at life.
The Latin Heat will still field all-Latino teams in the two men’s fixtures scheduled for the day.
