THERE are sponsors that are part of a team. Then there are teams that are part of their sponsors’ team.
When the developing nations of Latin America line up for next weekend’s Rugby League Revolucion event at Liverpool All Saints on February 4, there will be at least five enforcers with one thing in common.
The quintet are guards for one of the biggest sponsors of the sport in the Americas, SHIELD Security.
Peru, which will line up against Africa United at 4pm, will have SHIELD guards Sean Day and Sergio Rios carting the ball forward.
The Emperadores will also have the SHIELD logo emblazoned across their chest.
El Salvador, set to take on Thailand at 7pm, has towering forward JC Mendez in their ranks, a SHIELD employee who operates around Melbourne.
Next up will be the Chilean pair of Jaden Laing and Jonathan Espinoza, facing up against Poland at 8.30pm.
Chile, like Peru, carries the SHIELD emblem on its jersey.
Of course the major sponsor for all of Latin America is Guzman y Gomez Taquerias, who will be sponsoring the entire Rugby League Revolucion event, as well as the Latin Heat’s appearance at this Saturday’s International Nines at Cabramatta.
One of the players set to line up for the Latin Heat on Saturday is Colombian David Goyeneche, who works at World Square GYG.
A former national representative in rugby union for his nation, Goyeneche works alongside another Colombian rugby league talent in Alejandro ‘Pirry’ Restrepo.
In Brisbane, another Colombian squad member, Andres Jimenez, has worked in the kitchen at GYG Windsor, while several other Colombian players’ wives are employed by the team backer.
The efforts of the 100% volunteer-run Latin Heat Rugby League are supported by Guzman y Gomez Mexican Taquerias, S.H.I.E.L.D Security, Tattoo Tears, OneBigSwitch.com.au, Cast Graphics, SeriousAboutRL.com, Retrocom Digital TV Specialists, Colombianos en Brisbane, EMSA Education and Migration Services, Raw Juicery, SEMCAR Mechanics, Lichtnauer and Associates Accountants, Cabramatta Ink, Majestic Property Maintenance, musician Royal El Latino and Darkside Studio Photography.
